Shetland pencil skirt and box jacket

You may not have room for this woolly friend in your garden, but the good news is he comes wardrobe-sized too.

His wool, along with that of his 599 friends, all rescued from slaughter by Izzy Davies (pictured), goes towards making Izzy Lane, her luxurious and stylish range of knitwear, tailored skirts, jackets and coats.

Lane keeps her flock of 600 collection of Wensleydale and Shetland sheep in Richmond, near the Yorkshire Dales.

The knitwear is made with the fine fleece of the Wensleydale sheep, while the coats, skirts and jackets are made from the super-fine fleeces of the rare Shetland sheep, used undyed in their natural colours. Spinning, handknitting, weaving and dyeing is all done within the British Isles.

The result is an elegant collection that easily travels from the Dales to the city. From the new Autumn / Winter 08 range, I especially love the Shetland wool pencil skirt (£159) and box jacket (£275) in brown windowpane check, pictured.

Why so green: Sweatshop-free manufacture in the US using 100% certified organic stretch cotton. Describes itself as ‘designed for the eco-chic woman’. A portion of profit goes to support The Sustainable Cotton Project, an organisation which promotes the manufacture and purchase of certified organically grown and sustainable cotton.
Styling: Super-skinny to wide-leg, low-rise to high-waisted. A celebrity favourite and featured in Vogue. They look very wearable, and not just for super-skinnies.

Why so green: Founded by Ali Hewson and Bono with a goal of helping to build sustainable communities in developing communities via trade rather than charity. It carefully audits its suppliers to ensure best practices. 50% of the spring / summer range is organic.
Styling: Another celebrity favourite. Fans include Natalie Portman and Jack Johnson.

Why so green: Made from organic cotton and eco-ball washed for softness. Don’t you just love that? Eco-ball washed for softness. Aww. High production values and quality fabrics so the jeans last for longer. To quote: ‘We make the best quality products that we know how. Because ultimately the best thing we can do for the environment is to make our stuff last a real long time.’ Also currently looking for lower impact dyeing processes.
Styling: Laid back.

Why so green: Elsom jeans are fair trade, non-toxic, made from organic cotton and using fabrics or processes that are sustainable. Top notch eco with great style.
Styling: They’re super sexy. Designer Sam Elsom trained at Central Saint Martins. Kate Moss wears them.

Why so green: Sweatshop-free manufacture in Los Angeles.
Styling: Spotted by denim aficionados by its signature rope stitch, three times fatter than the average. The classic Easy Rider jean is loved and worn by Britney Spears, J-Lo and Beyonce, all of whom have curves. Sienna Miller also loves them.
